Role Purpose

The Principal Engineer is one of the most senior individual contributor roles at Chubb Digital. This is not a traditional engineering role - it sits at the intersection of deep technical mastery, organisational influence, and strategic leadership. This person is a CTO-equivalent for the engineering organisation: someone who sets the technical direction, earns the trust of senior stakeholders across the enterprise, and drives transformational initiatives - including the adoption of AI - without necessarily managing a large team directly

This individual will define how Chubb Studio builds software for the next decade, champion engineering excellence, and be the connective tissue between architecture, product, and the broader technology organisation.

What You’ll Do

Technical Vision . Architecture

• Set the long-term technical direction for Chubb Digital, owning architectural decisions across .NET / Azure-based platforms.

• Serve as the final technical authority on critical design decisions, navigating trade-offs between speed, scalability, security, and cost.

• Define and govern enterprise architecture and design standards, patterns, and principles in close partnership with the Architecture function.

• Lead platform modernisation and cloud-native transformation on Azure, including microservices, event-driven architectures, and API strategy.

• Identify and address systemic technical debt with a pragmatic, prioritised approach tied to business outcomes.

• Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies — particularly AI/ML tooling — assessing strategic fit before broader adoption.

AI Adoption . Innovation

• Own the AI adoption roadmap for Chubb Digital — from developer productivity tools to AI-powered product features.

• Partner with product and business teams to identify high-value AI use cases, define PoCs, and drive scaled delivery.

• Build internal capability by running enablement sessions, publishing best practices, and mentoring engineers on AI-native development patterns.

• Stay ahead of the curve on LLMs, generative AI, Azure OpenAI, and enterprise AI platforms, translating landscape shifts into actionable guidance.

• Establish responsible AI governance frameworks — covering fairness, security, compliance, and auditability — appropriate for an insurance context.

Engineering Excellence

• Champion engineering quality across the organisation: code standards, review culture, testing strategy, CI/CD maturity, and observability.

• Define and track engineering metrics that matter — deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR, test coverage, reliability — and hold the bar high.

• Lead complex incident reviews and embed a blameless, learning-focused engineering culture.

• Drive developer experience improvements: tooling, environments, onboarding, and inner-loop productivity.

• Own non-functional requirements across security, performance, resilience, and compliance — partnering with InfoSec, Risk, and Compliance teams.

Stakeholder Engagement . Organisational Influence

• Operate with presence and credibility at all levels — from engineering teams to C-suite — translating technical complexity into clear business language.

• Build strong partnerships with Architecture, Product, Infra and Chapter leads across Chubb globally.

• Navigate organisational complexity with maturity: aligning competing priorities, managing ambiguity, and driving consensus without formal authority.

• Represent Chubb Studio's engineering perspective in enterprise-level forums, governance boards, and cross-functional planning.

What We are Looking for

Experience . Background

• 18. years in software engineering with at least 5 years operating at a principal, distinguished, or architect-level scope.

• Expert-level proficiency in .NET (C.) and the Azure ecosystem — you are someone teams look to when things get hard.

• Proven track record of defining and delivering architecture for large-scale, mission-critical systems in regulated industries.

• Experience leading or shaping AI/ML adoption within an engineering organisation — not just using tools, but driving strategy.

• Background in a complex matrix organisation or large enterprise, where influence matters as much as technical skill.

• Experience working directly with or alongside executive stakeholders, architecture boards, or equivalent governance structures.

Technical Competencies

• Expert .NET / C.: Deep knowledge of modern .NET (6/7/8., ASP.NET Core, Blazor, performance tuning, and enterprise patterns.

• Expert Azure Platform: Azure architecture, AKS, Service Bus, API Management, Azure OpenAI, DevOps, well-architected framework.

• Cloud-Native Patterns: Microservices, event sourcing, CQRS, distributed systems, API gateway design, and resilience patterns.

• AI/ML Engineering: Working knowledge of LLM integration, RAG, prompt engineering, and enterprise AI tooling.

• Security . Compliance: Identity (OAuth2, OIDC), zero-trust architecture, data privacy, and secure SDLC in regulated environments.

• DevOps . Platform Engineering: Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Bicep/Terraform), observability (App Insights, Dynatrace).

• Data . Integration: REST, gRPC, event-driven architectures, data platform awareness, and integration patterns

• Frontend Awareness: Sufficient depth in modern web (Angular or React) to partner effectively with UI engineering leads

• Executive presence: able to command a room of senior stakeholders and translate complex ideas without losing nuance.
